Group Activities

The following activities have been developed and are being delivered through the Climate Change Group:

Energy Heroes

Energy Heroes
If you are a local business, school, community group or household doing your bit to reduce your impact on climate change, we want to hear from you.

Dudley Climate Change Group is on the look out for the borough’s energy heroes with the launch of a brand new award.

Energy Heroes is aimed at everyone in the borough and recognises the achievements of local projects which are making a positive contribution to reducing carbon emissions and the local impact on climate change.

There are two categories of award, a community category which includes households, schools, voluntary and community groups and a business category which is open to all private sector businesses and not for profit organisations.

Judges will be looking for projects which have reduced energy or carbon emissions in the last 12 months and which can be used as examples for other people keen to make their own contribution to reducing the impact of climate change.

You can download a nomination form below or apply online for the Energy Heroes award.

Everyone submitting an entry will receive recognition of their project, with winning entries receiving a special award.

The closing date for entries is 31 March 2010. Shortlisiting will take place in April/May with an awards ceremony later in the summer.

Energy Heroes is a project of the Dudley Climate Change Group. It is supported by Dudley Council, Dudley Community Partnership, the Environment Agency, Groundwork West Midlands, the Black Country Chamber of Commerce, Business Link and Boss Design.

Low Carbon Community approach

This is a project to pilot a range of climate change activities within a defined geographic area in order to enable measurement of their impact upon CO2 emissions. It will also be used to gauge people’s attitude and behaviour towards climate change and any changes in these.

It has been agreed that the most favourable area to pilot this Low Carbon Community Approach is Stourbridge, due to the existence of a group that is already tackling climate change. This group is Transition Stourbridge, more detail of which can be found at http://www.transitiontowns.org/ .  Transition Towns start off when a small collection of motivated individuals within a community come together with a shared concern: how can our community respond to the challenges, and opportunities, of Peak Oil and Climate Change?  They begin by forming an initiating group and then adopt the Transition Model.

A more defined area within Stourbridge will be targeted that will be diverse so as to enable a wide range of activities with different approaches to be piloted. It will include a mix of affluence, different housing types, business (commercial and retail), community buildings and activity etc.  Also to be considered in the choice of area is the population size and the existence of community activity to hook in to.

It is anticipated that evaluation of the pilot will enable various Low Carbon Community approaches to be delivered across the borough.  Taking this approach will not inhibit the delivery of other climate change activities whilst the pilot is being undertaken. Please see attached project briefs at the bottom of this page.

Community Buildings

Community buildings can be highly suitable for a variety of environmental technologies and sustainable energy measures.  There are external sources of funding, such as the Big Lottery funded Community Sustainable Energy Programme (CSEP) that can allow any locally secured funding to have a very high leverage.

By actively promoting the actions taken in community buildings to users and the wider public, it is hoped that others will implement sustainable energy technologies in homes and businesses. Early demand for these technologies from community buildings also helps local suppliers or potential suppliers of low carbon goods and services see early the opportunities that the next decade will provide.

The aim is to target 10 community buildings, which will apply for a feasibility study to be undertaken through CSEP by April 2010.  From this, it is anticipated that a total of 5 capital investments to take place, resulting in 100 tonnes Co2 savings over a 20 year lifetime.  (An example of Co2 savings is that a solar hot water panel would cost in the region of £5000 and would save in the region of 0.5 tonnes CO2 per year or about 10 tonnes in a 20 year lifetime).

Training

Dudley Council are updating their training package on sustainable development as part of the staff training programme.  Greater emphasis will be placed on building awareness of the impacts of climate change and actions to reduce energy use within the workplace.   A workshop style event(s) is also being planned to take place with elected members.

It is planned that a variety of training packages will be developed for partner agencies, community and voluntary groups and businesses.

Dudley Together - Climate Change Articles

The Spring edition of Dudley Together saw the first double-page climate change spread, written by members of the Climate Change group.  It included climate change case studies from across the borough and across all sectors, as well as top tips in reducing carbon footprints and saving money.

This is now a regular feature in Dudley Together, with the Summer Edition containing more case studies and top tips.  The Climate Change group will pull together all future articles.  It is planned to have a regular competition to encourage case studies coming forward to be featured.  These case studies will be included on the Climate Change group pages.
