Climate change (also known as global warming) is a serious problem that affects us all. There is strong evidence that human emissions of greenhouse gases are changing the world's climate. The main greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide (CO2), produced when we burn fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas for energy. Over 40 per cent of CO2 emissions in the UK come directly from what we do as individuals; for example, heating and using electricity in our homes - and driving vehicles. Flights are the next biggest source of individuals’ CO2 emissions. The Climate Change Group was created in April 2008. It is a sub group of the Strategic Housing and Environment Partnership (SHEP). The Group was initially created to develop a draft delivery plan for Climate Change, for Dudley's Local Area Agreement 2008-11. The Local Area Agreement (LAA) stated that Dudley MBC and the Dudley Community Partnership (DCP) recognises the importance of ‘Leading the Way’ in tackling the global problems of climate change. As a result it was agreed that the National Indicator (NI) 186 “Per capita reduction of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions in the Local Authority area” be included in the LAA. The ongoing purpose of the Climate Change Group is to develop and deliver activities to reduce the Borough's carbon emissions. This will be through positive action taken by organisations, groups, households and individuals. Information about the specific activities can be found to the left. The membership of the Climate Change Group is wide and includes 'service provider' organisations from the public and voluntary sector, along with community representatives through Dosti. you can find contact details and links to member's web sites, to the left. Many of the Climate Change Group members are already doing something to reduce the impact upon climate change. An audit is currently being undertaken to see what is happening and what could be expanded or bolstered which is already having a positive impact upon reducing carbon emissions or awareness raising of the issue. The Climate change Group recognises that there is already a lot of activity that people are are doing to save energy and reduce carbon emissions. The Group collects case studies from across the Borough for the quarterly Dudley Together magazine. A collection of these case studies can be found to the left. The Group also uses statistical data and household survey results to inform its development of activity. For details of these sources of information, click on the page to the left. |
