Young minds, lasting ideas…

Organisational Purpose

  • To give more young people within their community a voice that can be heard by local decision makers, in order for a better community from the point of view of a young person

  • To engage with partners, outside agencies and young people to continually update better and more co-operative ways of engaging young people within their community successfully

  • To engage directly with other young people to get them involved in neighbourhood improvements

Organisational Structure – The National and Regional Picture

Young Advisors is a nationally run charity spread over 9 areas in England. As well as working directly with the government through the charity Dudley Young Advisors also works in partnership with Connexions and the council, alongside working with other members of the partnership as and when Young Advisors are needed.

Organisational Structure – The Local Picture

On a local level, Dudley Young Advisors are based and work primarily within the Dudley Borough. However, along with working closely with London the way in which the charity is organised allows each scheme to interact in order to continue positive practice and the increasing positive report of Young Advisors. Locally, Dudley Young Advisors have and continue to work with, connexions, dosti, Safe and Sound, Dudley Community Partnership, Dudley Children’s Trust, Centre for Equality & Diversity and any other agency that needs the views and ideas a young person can give as a professional consultant.

Common purpose with Local Strategic Partnerships (LSPs)

The success of young advisors comes from reports of the agencies that we have worked in partnership with, along with the growing demand for our service. The purpose of the LSP is to engage more effectively with young people not only are Young Advisors young people but they also enable assistance in helping to contact the wider community and thus more young voices.

Drivers

Young Advisors are motivated in their role because:

  • They are young people talking about what affects them, and are listened to them on a professional level.

  • We seek to advocate the phrase ‘your voice matters’, and although we are young we do also have ‘lasting ideas’

  • We also desire to become more predominant within the partnership and engage in more work locally in order to make changes in the communities that we work and live in.

Potential benefits from LSP engagement

  • Increased networking allows for Young Advisors to be used in a more effective and efficient way within the local authority.

  • A better grounding for the scheme in order to keep the sustainability for Dudley Young Advisors in the present and the future.

Constraints

  • The lack of power within our position
  • Lack of funding agencies have for commissioned work.

Other things you need to know

Young advisors are aged between 15 and 21, within Dudley we have been in existence since February 07 whereby 3 Young Advisors are still in their roles. Recently we have recruited 6 more Young Advisors whom will join the team in order to keep the sustainability of the project afloat, it brings more new and interesting ideas to the team and ultimately will make the workforce larger which will enable more work to be untaken by us.
