Introduction
Boss Design, Dudley was founded in 1983 and has developed a reputation as a green supplier of office furniture. The company ensures the social, environmental and economic impacts of the activities are always a positive one.
What was involved
Boss Design has incorporated sustainability principles into their business through the adoption of their Corporate Social Responsibility policy and the achievement of a recognised standard that helps organisations reduce their environmental impact and comply with environmental laws. This activity has entailed work in the following areas;
Corporate Social Responsibility
Corporate Social Responsibility describes a range of projects implemented by a business that helps them connect with local communities. Boss Design believes in recycling wherever possible and diverted 209 tonnes from landfill during 2010. This included 89 tonnes of redundant furniture that was donated to Community Transport, a community based charity that provides a range of services to under privileged members of the community.
Carbon Neutral Company
Boss Design worked closely with the Carbon Neutral Company and became a fully accredited carbon neutral business in 2007; a clear statement of Boss Design’s commitment to reduce their net carbon emissions to zero. This goal was achieved through commitment to reduce carbon emissions by over one hundred and fifty tonnes through innovative measures such as the use of low emissions vehicles and measuring the processes used to obtain raw materials used for each chair. Simple measures have also yielded significant benefits, e.g. turning down heating by 10 has reduced gas use by 8%.
Outcomes
Boss Design has been awarded several national accolades that recognise their commitment to integrating sustainability principles throughout the business; most notably of which is the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development 2009.
